8 Ways to Provide the Career Education in the Childhood: A Guide For Parents




The career education or career development is an important factor in child education. The children are needed career related suggestions. The parents as the first and effective educator of the child play an effective role in the child developmental process. The home environment also plays a major role in career education.  It requires the joint effort of the parent, school, and society to provide the career education.

   

 What is the Career Education?

Career education is defined is a process of developing ability, attitude and getting knowledge which enables children to both understand and perform efficiently in their chosen career or vocations, some time is also called vocational education. There are some suggestions which help the parents in providing career education to their children.

How Parents Provide the Career Education to the Child

It is the very important question that how parents promote the career education in the childhood. It is the collective responsibility of parents, teacher, and community to promote the career education in the schooling and domestic level.  There are eight effective ways to which strongly help the parents in providing the career education:

  1. Provide the Career Awareness



 Career awareness helps the child to know about the nature and characteristics of the career. It makes easy for a child to select the best profession. Career awareness is the primary and fundamental factor in the career development. Parents must try to know the child’s interest. It is challenging task that how parents help the child in the career development.  Here are some tips which help the parents to provide the career awareness in childhood.  


  • Discuss with the child about different types of occupations in the childhood.
  • Explore the nature and requirements of different jobs and business.
  • Provide the environment in which the child frequently talks about his future, planning and show his interests and visions.
  • Parents encourage the child when he starts to discuss his interest and career selection.
  • Provide the opportunities to the child for getting introduction and experiences as a worker or volunteers. Visit the workplace and location for getting information. Let the child get information or practically examine and use the tools of different trades and professions. This activity helps to increase the child’s interest and also make easy to take the decision about the professional career.
  • Discuss the latest opportunism of occupations.
  • Encourage the development of child’s hobbies. Show the child how people convert their hobbies into the job with examples.
  • Arrange the meetings with people who work in areas of your child’s interest.


  2. Build the Positive Attitudes Related to Occupation

The domestic and school environment plays a significant role in the development of child’s occupational attitudes. Parents try to develop the suitable attitudes which relate to selected job and professional career.  Every occupation requires some primary attitudes such as discipline and regularity which must be developed in the childhood. How parent develop the positive attitude? There is some suggestion which helps the parents to develop the positive attitudes: 
  • Give some work responsibilities to your child at home such as making his own bed, watering and keeping own room straightened. These little activities help the child to build the professional attitudes and appreciate the child for the successful efforts.
  • Discuss openly and distribute the jobs fairly considering available time, interest and ability.
  • Parents show their behavior as a role model.

3. Self Awareness

The self- concept is an important factor in the career education. Academic achievements and occupational choices strongly relate to child self-concept.  The child self- concept is mostly shaped by his communicating with others and other’s response to child’s actions.  The big question is that how parents develop the self- awareness in the child which strongly help the child in career development. The following ways help the parents in the development of self-awareness regarding career education:


  • Identify the areas where your child can improve. Don’t focus your expectation and interest on your child. Look upon child’s abilities and interests. Change your expectations according to child abilities and interest.
  • Encourage the child performance and achievements.  
  • The self-understanding and expression are necessary for career development.  Let the child show and explore his/her potential for better understanding of self.
  • Say to your child that his wishes and interests are accepted and valuable to them. Let the child express his emotions towards family members, friends, and other fellows. Keep in mind that expression behavior should be social and acceptable. Parents should Choose the suitable way when they want to change the anti-social behavior. Learn the methods that how to change the antisocial behavior in the childhood.
  • The child must know that his unique image is important for the development of self-awareness.  Become the role model and spend leisure-time in community work as a volunteer. Encourage the child to do some work as a volunteer for the community.
  • Find the time to support the child for his hobbies in the appropriate way.
  • Encourage your child by rewarding with praise after completing his job or work.Show pleasure on his child’s work and task.


4. Develop the Decision-Making  Ability

Decision-making skills play a vital role in career development.  Parents must develop the decision-making ability in early childhood. It is important to understand that there are many reasons behind the child selection which relate to capabilities, values, liabilities, experiences, fears, likes and dislike. The elementary level is very important to shape the attitudes concerning earning and spending of money. The child has more opportunities in elementary level for decision-making process according to economics. This is an important topic that how to develop the decision-making skills in childhood.There are some important tips to develop the decision-making ability regarding with career development.
  • Play has an important role in the development of decision-making ability in the children.
  • Provide the opportunities for your child in the selection of school course. Keep the better options, inform the child about various possible alternatives and their consequences before making the decision.
  • Help the child to understand the other’s decision making actions and discuss with the child way he made this decision or way other people make that decision.  


5. Economic Awareness

The child must aware about all the goods and service which are available for him through cooperative efforts of others relatives and workers. Ask the questions such as where we do get fresh bread?  How does the store get its fruits and vegetables? Let the child find the answer by searching in the books or other persons. Help the child to find the information in the books and from the right people.  Try to increase the child information and knowledge about the marketing, and distribution of goods.  Inform him about making and restoring process.  There are eight effective strategies for economic awareness to your child:
  • Teach the child about the importance of collective work in business and every field of life. 
  • Visit to post office and utility stores and tell the child how they work for us.
  • Provide the opportunity for the child to getting some experience of business and work on any suitable project. The business experience is important for the child career development.
  • The small home – operated business play an effective role in the development of career.  the engage the child in home- operated business such as lawn cutting, childcare, cooking and door to door selling.  Involve the child in family projects from planning stage to finishing.
  • Parents involve the child in budgeting process at homes such as saving technique, credit and insurance policies for the economic understanding.  Parents must talk openly about family budget and inform the child that how much they earned in the month. Explain to the child how the budget goes for several expenses such as the electronic bill, house rent, and insurance.
  • Discuss how can they spend on children and let the child make their budget according to pocket money.
  • The child needs to aware that how occupational choices impact on their personal economic situation and on the lifestyle.
  • Plan trip to the job places and show the child how they work and also inform him about economic benefits such as which type of job have a lot of money and which is belong to the low-income outcome. This activity helps the child to select the perfect choices.

6. Education Awareness

The educational awareness relates to child understanding and assuring that he can reach and achieves the desired goal. The child believes that it is realistically possible to reach his educational and vocational goal. The following five tips help the parents to provide the educational awareness:
  • Discuss with the child about his interest and occupational areas. Talk about the possible opportunities at every level of that occupation such as health occupation includes doctor, physician, and technician etc.
  • Provide the opportunity for the child to work as a volunteer.  Inform the child about the educational requirement of that job. Aware the child about the educational requirement to reaching the selected goal.
  • Discuss the ways and roots to reach the educational goal such as scholarship programs etc.  Provide the literature about the areas of interest of the child.
  • Provide the information and counseling to your child form school counselors, librarians, occupational specialist and that person who know about the areas of child interest.  Parents also try to increase their information related to child’s occupational area and discuss with their child.
  • Arrange the discussion session with school counselors or occupational specialist for the aptitude tests when your child feels hesitation to explore his interest.

  7. Develop the Employ-ability skills

Employability skills are the essential part of career education.  The home is the first workplace which plays a key role in the development of employ-ability skills in children. The child learns who communicate with others. The communication skills should be developed in the childhood and how to develop the social skills in childhood. Communication skills are necessary to develop the human relationship. It is the important question that how parent develops the employ-ability skills of the children. There are six tips to develop the employ-ability skills:
  • Teach the methods for resolving conflict and how the child avoids the power struggle game 
  • Develop the listening ability in your child. Listening ability and following the direction are the essential parts of communication.
  • Give the opportunity to the child for assembling molding role in the play, cooking from recipes.
  • Parents must admit when they feel that they have exercise poor or wrong decision or judgment in a situation. Teach the child that the realization of poor judgment is the good practice.
  • Provide the opportunities for the child to supervise himself and work under the other’s supervision. These both types of opportunities develop the responsible behavior in the children.  
  • Discuss with your child about the higher authorities who are necessary for society such as parental authority and governmental or institutional authorities.  These authorities regulate the business and other family-related issues.   

8. Develop the Competency of the Children

Parents must focus on the development of competences in the children. The child requires developing several competencies for the successful life.
  • Parents should give the positive feedback on the child’s work and give some suggestion to more improving his working ability.
  • Parents also have strong influences on the development of child’s habits such as accuracy and completeness.  Encourage the child in completing any task and ensure the accuracy during working. 
  • Parents try to develop the responsible behavior in their children such as child clean up the work area. Teach the child about the characteristics which make the child responsible. 


Career education is a primary part of childhood education. It assists the children/individual to make their occupational and educational choices and chose the career. The career education also helps the children to understand their strengths and weakness. Parents must provide the friendly environment and instruct the children in effective ways.
