Why Play is Important for Child Learning: 10 Top Learning Benefits of Play in Childhood


 Play helps to develop the foundation of social, intellectual, cognitive, physical and emotional skills which are necessary for the high academic outcomes. Play encourages exploration which helps to learn new skills and concepts.[1]

Importance of Play

Children practice new skills, gain confidence and discover the solutions for complex problems during play. Play helps the child to interacts with other peers and understands the importance of other children.  It can provide the opportunities to develop the foundation of independence and child know about his strength and know the value of cooperation.

The play is an important activity to develop the creative ability. The child starts to think about new ideas during play. Play provides the opportunities for the child to independent mobility explore the new ideas and create his own individuality /identity in his early age.[2] The child experiment with several behaviors when he built ds new block tower, create new shapes. This activity helps to promote creativity.

Play helps to gain confidence. The child when complete his task or game, he feels pleasure and starts to believe in his abilities that he can complete any other task.

Play helps to better neurological development in early childhood. Children use imagination and imitation during play. which help to improve the mental process. Hanline, Milton, and Phelps (2010) write that “preschoolers who had high levels of representation in their block constructions had higher reading abilities and a faster rate of growth in reading in early elementary school”.[4]
Bergen and Mauer (2000) say that “children with who engaged in more play with literacy materials (e.g., pretend reading to stuffed animals, making shopping lists) at age four had more advanced language abilities and reading readiness in kindergarten”. [5]

During play, children can get experience about the expression of real emotions and respond to new different situations. Play enables children to shape friendships and attachments with other peers.  The child learns the values of trust and cooperation during play.  He learns the positive ways of emotional expression and enables to regulate his thoughts.

 Play helps to improve the mathematical and scientific concept. During play, the child learns different mathematical concepts such as big and small, classification, measurements, short and tall, counting, ordering. [8]   It is also documented that children begin to understand logical scientific thinking such as effect and cause during play to blocks, papers, and objects.[9]
